The development of the North-Eastern Region of Singapore was significantly influenced by Singapore’s industrialization and urbanization efforts in the 20th century.
In the early days, the region was primarily known for its agricultural activities, such as farming and fishing. As Singapore began to industrialize in the mid-20th century, the North-Eastern Region became a hub for manufacturing and industrial activities. Factories and industrial parks were established, attracting workers from various parts of the country.
To accommodate the growing population, the government embarked on large-scale housing development projects especially in Punggol and Sengkang, providing affordable housing options for Singaporeans.
Today, Singapore’s North-Eastern Region, comprising primarily of Ang Mo Kio, Hougang, Serangoon, Seletar, Sengkang and Punggol, is a vibrant and rapidly evolving area, characterized by its diverse landscape, blending urban development with lush greenery and water bodies. It is also the most densely populated areas in Singapore.
The region continues to undergo development and transformation, with a focus on improving the quality of life for its residents. In line with its ‘Heartland Living, Where the Familiar Meets the Future’ tagline, URA’s masterplan for the North-Eastern Region aims to revitalize the area by integrating modern housing developments into existing neighbourhoods.
1. Lentor Neighbourhood
By now, many home buyers will be familiar with the Lentor estate, a new residential estate developed to address the housing needs of the growing population in the mature Ang Mo Kio town. Lentor Hills offers a promising future with a variety of housing options in a serene environment.
2. Serangoon and Hougang
Hougang and Serangoon are well-established residential areas that offer a diverse range of amenities, housing options, and employment opportunities.
With the newly transformed industrial park at Defu and the upcoming development of Lorong Halus into a new job cluster for food, lifestyle and logistics industry, both these areas will be rejuvenated with new housing (eg. Lorong Chuan), community amenities and park (Ang Mo Kio Linear Park and improvement works around Serangoon Reservoir, Sungei Pinang and Hougang Ave 10).
In addition to revitalizing existing neighbourhoods with modern housing, the government’s development of the Seletar Aerospace Park and Punggol Digital District is also driving demand for housing in the North-Eastern region of Singapore especially within Sengkang and Punggol.
Earlier this year, plans were announced for a new residential development in Sengkang that could accommodate up to 10,000 homes, including a mix of public and private housing options.
The 50ha digital district in Punggol will house key industries of the digital economy, such as cyber-security and digital technology firms and incorporate a JTC Corporation business park and the Singapore Institute of Technology’s new campus.
The North-Eastern Region’s future looks promising, with a focus on sustainable living, improved connectivity, and a diverse range of amenities. These developments are not only fuelling demand for housing and enhancing the quality of life for residents but also contributing to the overall economic growth and development of Singapore.
